WWDC 2006: Mac Pro Announced
Posted on Monday, August 7th, 2006 at 1:22 pm.

Announced is the successor to the PowerMac G5 - the Mac Pro.

“The brand new Mac Pro will be based on Intel’s Xeon chips, also known as Woodcrest. Based on Core 2 microarchitecture. Run at speeds up to 3 GHz and include 4 MB shared L2 cache. 127-bit vector engine that’s even faster than the Veloocity Engine. And they’re 64-bit If you compare the performance/watt, you see up to 3x performance per watt than we got in the G5. It’s an amazing processor to put in our products, but in every Mac Pro we’re going to put two of them. Comparison: G5 quad to Xeon quad. From 54 to 115 increase, 2.1x. From 48 to 76, 1.6x increase. 4.8 to 7.6 From 1.5 to 1.8x faster with applications.”

Um, holy crap! Intel Xeon chips + Mac = 110% 1337 pwnage. And 64-bit, baby! So we’ve got two dual-core Xeon chips in the PowerMac. That’s just mind-blowing, dontchathink? Then we’re adding on a 25GB/sec, four-channel, 256 bit wide memory access for each processor. And then they’ve got 4 hard drive slots, having a maximum storage limit of 2TB.

So they’re offering the standard configuration: 2 Dual Core Xeons, 1GB of memory, 250GB hard drive, nVidia GEForce 7300GT with 256 MB memory and 16xc Superdrive for $2499.. They then claim that Dell sells similar configurations for $1000 more. Who just got pwnd? Dell just got pwned. Along with everyone else.

Oh, and I forgot to mention it looks sexy.
